Mercy Flight Central has been serving our communities for decades, providing critical air
and ground medical transportation when every second matters. As the end of 2026
approaches, charitable giving can be a meaningful way to support this lifesaving mission
while also creating valuable tax planning opportunities for donors.
Tax-Smart Giving Strategies
Recent tax law changes have made it even more important to plan charitable contributions strategically. Beginning in 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize deductions may be eligible to claim a charitable deduction of up to $1,000 for single filers or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly for qualifying cash donations. In addition, taxpayers who itemize deductions can continue to deduct charitable contributions, although new limitations may reduce the tax benefit of smaller contributions.
Consider Donating Appreciated Investments
One of the most tax-efficient ways to support a charity is by donating appreciated stocks or mutual funds that have been held for more than one year. By transferring the securities directly to a qualified charity such as Mercy Flight Central, donors may receive a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the asset while generally avoiding capital gains tax on the appreciation. This can often provide a greater tax benefit than selling the investment and donating the proceeds.
Use of Donor-Advised Fund
For individuals looking to accelerate their charitable giving before year-end while maintaining flexibility over future charitable distributions, a donor-advised fund (DAF) may be a useful tool. A donor can make a contribution to the DAF in 2026, receive the corresponding tax deduction, and recommend grants to charities such as Mercy Flight Central across future years.
Qualified Charitable Distributions for Retirees
Individuals age 70½ and older who own traditional IRAs may be able to make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) directly from their IRA to a qualified charity. These distributions can satisfy all or a portion of required minimum distributions (RMDs) while excluding the donated amount from taxable income, providing a tax-efficient way to support charitable causes.
Bundle Contributions into a Single Year
Some taxpayers may benefit from "bunching" multiple years of planned charitable contributions into a single tax year. This strategy may allow taxpayers to exceed the standard deduction threshold and generate a larger overall tax benefit while continuing to support their favorite organizations over time.
Act Before December 31
To receive a charitable deduction for 2026, contributions generally must be completed by December 31, 2026. Donors should also retain proper documentation, including receipts and acknowledgments from the charity, to substantiate their deduction. Every gift to Mercy Flight Central helps ensure that emergency medical transportation remains available when patients and families need it most. By incorporating charitable giving into your year-end tax planning, you can make a lasting impact on your community while potentially reducing your tax burden.
