Before a Mercy Flight Central aircraft takes flight, the mission is already underway. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, our Communications Specialists serve as the first point of contact for emergency transport requests and the critical link between 911 centers, EMS agencies, fire departments, hospitals and flight crews.
From the initial request through mission completion, they coordinate air medical resources for scene responses and hospital-to-hospital transfers, communicate essential information, maintain situational awareness and provide continuous flight following—all in support of safe, timely and effective patient care.
What Does a Communications Specialist Do?
Receive and Coordinate Air Medical Requests
Communications Specialists gather and document essential mission details while coordinating with 911 centers, EMS agencies, fire departments, hospitals and transport teams. As a trusted communications resource for counties across New York State, Mercy Flight Central offers a “one call does it all” approach—connecting requesting agencies with available air medical resources and helping coordinate the most appropriate response for both scene and interfacility missions.
Certified Flight Communicators
Mercy Flight Central’s Communications Specialists complete specialized training designed specifically for the air medical environment, including Certified Flight Communicator training through the International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialists (IAMTCS). This education equips them with the knowledge and skills to manage mission-critical information, support flight crews and contribute to the safe, efficient coordination of every transport.
Our Communications Specialists also train alongside Mercy Flight Central’s flight crews, as well as 911 centers, emergency medical services, fire departments, and other public safety partners throughout our operating area. These collaborative training opportunities strengthen communication, improve coordination, and build the relationships necessary for a seamless response when every second matters.
